Welcome to the homepage of the Department of Medical Biochemistry!
We undertake research to elucidate the mechanism of the onset of lifestyle and age-related diseases.
In our laboratory, we use a variety of molecular biology and biochemistry techniques to analyze disease model mice and genetically modified mice to elucidate the causes of lifestyle-and age-related diseases such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome. We are developing new treatments. Recently, from the viewpoint of metabolic alteration, we are also conducting research on mechanism of aging.

山縣和也教授が、第69回日本糖尿病学会年次学術集会（2026年5月21日～23日／大阪国際会議場）において、ハーゲドーン賞を受賞しました。
この賞は、国際的に認められ、評価の確立した糖尿病研究に贈呈されるもので、日本糖尿病学会が顕彰する賞のひとつです。
山縣教授は、「核内因子からみた糖尿病発症の分子機構解明」に関する研究業績が認められての受賞となりました。
授賞式は5月21日に、受賞講演は5月23日に、いずれも大阪国際会議場 メインホールにて執り行われました。
■受賞対象研究の概要
「核内因子からみた糖尿病発症の分子機構解明」
我が国において糖尿病が強く疑われる人の数は増加を続けており、推計1100万人に上ります。糖尿病の一部は家族性（遺伝性）に発症しますが、その原因遺伝子や病態、適切な治療方法は不明でした。
山縣教授は、HNF1Aという遺伝子が遺伝性糖尿病の主要な原因遺伝子であり、同遺伝子の変異で糖尿病が発症する*ことを解明されました。また同遺伝子の異常でおきる糖尿病の特徴や最適な治療法についても明らかにされました。
山縣教授は、HNF1A遺伝子の異常による糖尿病の存在を世界で初めて発見し、その詳細な病態解明に成功したことが高く評価され、この度の受賞となりました。
