Insulin is the only hormone that lowers blood sugar. I am interested in the biology of these insulin-secreting pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans). I recently discovered that pancreatic islets are under oxygen deficiency (hypoxia) during the onset of diabetes, and I am currently working on research on the effects of hypoxia on pancreatic islet function.
